Sing for fun! Sing for JOY!
Why choir?
At the start of my vocal journey, I eagerly embraced every opportunity to develop and strengthen my voice. I took regular singing lessons, performed in local musical theatre productions, and began writing songs and gigging with a rock band.
But it was through choir that I truly honed my craft and ignited a lasting passion for singing.
I believe that there is something incredibly fulfilling about singing with others, where we are (quite literally!) raising our voices together in unity and harmony.
This sense of togetherness is the heart of Joy Community Choir. It is a place where all voices are welcome, regardless of experience or ability. A place where you can build your voice alongside others, and where the joy of singing is accessible to all.
Thinking of joining? Here’s some FAQ:
What are sessions like?
Each session begins with vocal warm ups and vocal exercises, to help you to learn more about how to use your voice efficiently and confidently, The rest of the session is then spent learning songs from across a variety of genres. There is a break in the middle where you can help yourself to free refreshments and catch up with your fellow singers.
Our current repertoire includes songs by Fleetwood Mac, Billie Eilish, Coldplay and KT Tunstall.
Do I need to read music?
No! We predominantly learn the songs by ear, however sheet music is provided for those who find it useful. Lyric sheets are provided, and many members annotate these so that they can find their own ways to remember what to sing. Audio recordings are usually provided for those who want to practice their parts at home.
Do I have to audition to join?
Nope! Joy Community Choir is for all voices, regardless of your ability or experience. I believe that everyone can build a voice to be proud of, and group singing is the perfect place for anyone who feels nervous or uncertain. Nobody is required to sing solo and everyone is super friendly and encouraging.
How old do you have to be?
Joy Community Choir is open to everyone over the age of 18. There is no upper age limit!
I don’t know what voice type I am, is that a problem?
Not at all! We generally sing songs in 3 part harmony, with parts singing either high, middle or lower. If you’re not sure which is best for you, I will allocate you a part to try for a few weeks and if you feel that a different section will feel more comfortable for you, you are more than welcome to swap.
How much does Joy Community Choir cost?
Everyone’s first month at Joy Community Choir is free! After that, monthly membership is £40pm. Fees are due at the beginning of each month by direct debit. We run most weeks of the year, including August.
I am passionate about singing being as accessible as possible, therefore subsidised memberships are available for those on lower incomes. So whether you’re a student, in recipient of benefits, or are simply feeling the squeeze of the cost of living crisis, please do let me know if you feel that this would be beneficial to you.
